the winter. Their present rate, pending the completion of

a new wing to the hotel, is $350.

Included in the rates is conveyance daily to

and from Victoria and lunch at the Hongkong Hotel.

I submit that these figures shew that an

unmarried man receiving $500 a month, as in the case of the

Post Office Accountant, out of which this correspondence

arose, would have ample margin for his living expenses and would not be obliged to content himself with the cheapest accommodation available in these establishments.

It should be understood that all the

establishments referred to are such as any person in the

Colony who had no house might reasonably be expected to patronize. There are cheaper hotels and boarding houses which provide adequate accommodation for those to whom economy is the first consideration.
